Arlene was born October 31, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Anna and Charles George. She attended Marquette University, and received her certification as a dental hygienist. In 1950, she married Jude Hayes of Milwaukee, who also attended Marquette. Over the next 20 years, Arlene was a homemaker with seven children while her husband went to medical school at University of Washington
and served in the US Navy. In 1970, Arlene divorced and moved with her children to the SF Bay Area where she began to work as a hygienist. During this time, her children flourished and she presided over a large community of young musicians, artists and runaways, many of whom consider her their "second mom". In the early 80's, she moved with her three youngest children to the Sacramento area, where she worked until the age of 74, when she retired. Arlene was a mother above all, and her chief enjoyment was spending time with her family. She enjoyed creating stained glass lamps and windows, traveling, reading, bird-watching, and chocolate. She is survived by her brother Robert and sister Kathleen, daughters Bonnie, Rosanne and Michelle and sons Christopher, Kevin, Shawn and Jonathan, as well as her grandchildren Nick, Max, Colin, Emory, Paris, Austin, Lily Burns, Ben and Sarah, nieces Jill and Shannon Carducci, Dan and Jackie Rheingan, and Blake and Pernelle Hayes, as well as her many "adopted" children and lifelong friends. Service will be held on July 27, 2013 at Fair Oaks United Methodist Church, 9849 Fair Oaks Blvd in Fair Oaks, CA from 12:00-1:00. Donations may be made to Mercy Foundation/Hospice or Fair Oaks United Methodist Church Memorial Garden.
