Daniel Patrick Murphy

Born March 22, 1922, at Jersey City, NJ, he passed away peacefully on October 15, 2013. Of 2nd generation Irish immigrant parents, he was raised in Manhattan and later Queens. Finding Merchant Marine Service too dangerous, he joined the Marines in 1943 and was sent to Mayport, Fla. There he met and married Stella Murphy. One of the Old Breed, he fought at Tinian, Saipan, and Okinawa, and was wounded in that service. After VJ-Day he served as a China Marine near Tiensen until 1946. After the war he became a mounted policeman for the NYPD, a 20 year career. His 2nd career was in aircraft maintenance for Pan Am. This job let him pursue his hobbies of mountain climbing and rifle shooting competition internationally. In retirement, he settled in Sacramento. Stella passed away in 2006. Dan married Charlotte Kuhn and they, with several beloved dogs, have made their home in Arden-Arcade ever since. Both avid tennis players, they have also enjoyed frequent travel. He is survived by Charlotte and his sisters Mary in NY and Alice in Marin, his son Dan in Sacramento, daughters Miriam in Charlotte, NC, and Mary in Laytonville, his son Sean in Yuba City, stepson Bob Dean in Florida, and many grand and great-grandchildren. His family and friends will miss him keenly and remember his strength, wit, and kindness forever.
