With sorrow we announce the death of our mother. She passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully in her own home on Nov. 6, 2012 at the age of 86. Gladys was born and raised in West Texas in 1926, one of 7 children. As a child she milked cows, picked cotton, and contributed to the family farm life. She learned to be a fabulous country cook at a young age, sharing her many recipes with anyone who asked. In 1951 she married Bernard Ray. They raised four children together, traveling across the country as a military family. They settled in the Sacramento area in 1954.
Gladys was a beautiful person inside and out, loving toward any child she met, stranger or not. She loved to be called "Nanny" by friends and family. She was a wonderful homemaker, teaching all her children to cook, honor their homes, and to put their children first. She enjoyed providing for her family and guests - it was hard to leave her house without a plate of food in your hand. She loved to have fun, dress up with her dangling earrings, and share a smile with everyone.
Gladys is survived by her sister Joan Whitley of Stamford, TX, son Jerry Scott of Stamford, TX, daughters Sharon Tampas of Carmichael, CA (Peter) and Belinda Prather of Stamford, TX (Rob). She was preceded in death by her husband Bernie and her daughter Lisa Lewis of Sacramento, CA (Todd). She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren, Jenny, Kerry, Stephanie, Jacob, Mandy, Kimberly, and 15 great-grandchildren, who miss her dearly. A private celebration of her life was held at family member's home.
Thank you to all those who were so kind and gracious to her in her final years.
