GARCIA, Joe Cruz
of Sacramento CA passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 90 while at his residence, on 9-7-13. Born in Arlington California on March 19, 1923 and graduating from Polytechnic High School in 1943, he soon enlisted in the Navy as a radioman serving on the USS Patterson DD 392, and participated in 9 major battles on the Pacific during WWII
. He married his high school love on 11-25-45 and raised two boys. He later moved to Sacramento where he worked as the Branch Chief in the packing division of McClellan Air force base until retiring in 86. He also raised his grandson Scott 'Ricky' from the age of 9. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to work in his yard, keep his cars clean, go to Reno, and visit with friends and neighbors; as well as enjoying deserts like Pie a la mode, boysenberry pies, and of course a tall cold Budweiser and a good Mexican dinner. In November of 2011 Joe took a fall which lead him to needing assistance around the clock as he was nearly bed ridden. His grandson 'Ricky' became his primary care giver and along with help from other family members, was always by his side right up to his passing. Joe had a generous, loving heart and enjoyed life to its fullest; he will be missed dearly by those who knew him. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Cruz, 2 son's, Joe R. Cruz, Richard R. Cruz, 4 grand children, Michelle Wilbur, R. Scott 'Ricky' Cruz, James Cruz, Jennifer Cruz, and 3 great-grand children, Evy Wilbur, Abbey Cruz, and Kira Shuman. He is also survived by his brother Daniel Cruz and sister Sally Garcia. The memorial will be held at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 2:00pm.
There will be a private funeral the next day at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
