John Charles Davis

John Davis passed away January 21, 2013. Born on September 29, 1953 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, John attended Shorewood High School. John had fond memories of Wisconsin, and often spoke of his childhood home, summer beach house on Lake Michigan, near Cedar Grove, family, and his many friends and business acquaintances with whom he regularly communicated. John started his college education at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, but soon transferred to University of Wisconsin, Madison. He fondly recalled his college years and kept in touch with many of his college friends. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the Department of Film and Television, University of Wisconsin, Madison, John spent 13 years as a news photographer, first in Wisconsin, then in Kentucky. While in Lexington John worked at WKYT and was a prominent and lifelong member of the Bluegrass Whitewater Association. In 1990 he moved to Sacramento and worked at KVIE, Channel 6, where he was Director of Photography. John met his second wife, Denise Jurich, at KVIE. John shot and edited a variety of programs, ranging from local gardening shows to nationally broadcast documentaries. During this time, he was awarded numerous awards, including several regional Emmys. In 1995 John ventured out on his own and established Alpenwolf Productions, a video production company, and co-founded Performance Video, an instructional paddle-sport video production company. John was an avid reader and world traveler. He enjoyed a wide range of music and going to concerts and the theatre. John was an excellent cook and prepared delicious meals for his family. He loved aviation and the outdoors, and was a white water canoeist, telemark skier, and golfer. He was proud to be from Wisconsin and regularly watched University of Wisconsin, Madison and Green Bay Packers football games. John was a wonderful son-in-law to Thomas and Jean Jurich, and brother-in-law to Denise's siblings. He had a special place in his heart for dogs, especially collies. His "canine children" included Kodiak, Sitka, Shasta, Whitney, Chaco, and Ouray. John recently moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he lived with his good friends Don and Chris Spangler. While there he had the opportunity to reconnect with many of his old friends in the local television and boating communities. He was preceded in death by his parents Bowden and Virginia Davis. He is survived by wife Denise Jurich and her family; sister Ellen (Bryan) Davis Giesenschlag; nieces Amy (David) Giesenschlag Berger and Laura (Gary) Giesenschlag Williams; grand-nieces and nephews and countless friends. A memorial service in celebration of John's life will be held on Sunday, February 10th from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the KVIE Ose Community Room, 2030 W. El Camino Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95833.
