HILL, John Holtby Dec. 10, 1919 - Dec. 25, 2012
Passed away on Dec. 25 at the age of 93. Predeceased by his loving wife Eris. Survived by his beloved daughters Jeris Baker and Camille Hill, and his cherished grandsons Keith and Kirt Baker. His High School class nicknamed him 'Smiles' Hill in honor of his penchant for telling jokes, and his ready laugh. John Hill received a BS in Mathematics and an MA in Education from CSU Chico. He served his country in World War II
in the US Army as a Tech Sergeant sending and receiving Morse Code in the Yukon. He worked as a Highway Engineer, a Math teacher, and a Certification Analyst for the California State Teachers Commission. He was a fan of Star Trek, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Dr. Seuss. John was a long-time member of the Senior Track Club. He was heavily involved in his grandchildren's lives, helping with homework and attending every childhood event with relish. In his later life, he donated his time visiting elementary school classes to read to the students and talk about his experiences growing up in rural California in the early 1900s. Friends and family are invited to attend a ceremonial laying of a wreath on his grave at 1:00 pm on Jan. 6, 2012, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, 2720 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento, CA, 95818. Following the wreath laying, the family invites friends to celebrate his life from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the main mansion building at the Vizcaya Pavilion & Mansion, 2019 21st Street, Sacramento, CA, 95818. Flowers may be delivered c/o Camille Hill at the Vizcaya Pavillion & Mansion from Jan. 5-16.
