CONNOR, Lester E. 'Gene'

Born September 18, 1931 passed away peacefully May 30, 2013. Gene is survived by Sigi, his wife of 22 years. His daughter, Adrian (Ande) and husband James Minton; grandchildren: Spencer, Sidne, Megan, Kinsey: stepchildren; Bettina and Aaron Benedict. Gene was preceded by his parents May and Lester Connor and his brother William Connor. Gene was born In Lexington, TN and graduated from H.S. in Huntingdon, TN in 1949. He attended Murray St. College, KY in 1951. In June of 1951 he enlisted in the US Air Force
, he achieved rank of Staff Sergeant. He attended Officer Candidate School in March of 1956, graduating in September of 1956 as a Second Lieutenant. He attended Navigator Training and was awarded Navigator Wings in 1957. He advanced his training as a Navigator/Bombardier and graduated in 1958. He was assigned to fly the B-47's at Hunter AFB, Georgia In 1958. Then he continued on in the 'Bootstrap' program graduating with a BS in Industrial Engineering from OU in May of 1964. From there he was stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base Germany, working at a desk job for two years. In 1966 he returned to flying at Mildenhall Air Base England, flying KC-135 Airborne Command post. In 1968 he was transferred to CCK Air Base in Taiwan, flying C130's. There he had many combat missions flying temporary duty assignments in Viet Nam. In April of 1970 he was assigned to Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE flying EC-135 in an Airborne Command Post mission. In October of 1973 he transferred to Mather AFB, Sacramento, CA. Retiring from the US Air Force in May of 1979. His Awards consist of: Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Meritoriuos Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal. During his career his total flying time is 7339 hours. After retiring from the USAF be earned a Master's in Business from the GGU. In 1984 he started working for the State of California as a Bank Examiner, retiring in 1994.A graveside service with Military Honors will be held On June 24, 2013 1100 hrs at Fair Oaks Cemetery, Fair Oaks, CA.
