HERMANN, Walter Engle

Walter was born on September 14, 1926 to Ernst and Maize Hermann. One of 5 siblings, Walter grew up in Southern California, and enlisted into the service upon high school graduation. He served as a Seaman First Class in the US Navy Seabees during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge in August of 1946. Walter then went to work for Standard Oil Company as a Lab Assistant and Filling Plant Operator, while obtaining a degree in Agriculture at Pierce College 1947-1949. Late in 1949, Walter moved from Southern California to attend the University of California Davis. While at Davis, Walter played for the Aggie football team. At 6', 185 lbs., Walter played on both sides of the ball, and helped them win the Far Western Conference that year.

It was there he met a local resident Isabella McMurtry, and the two were wed a year later in 1950. Walter then accepted a position as Senior Superintendent of Cultivations at UC Davis Agricultural Services. He worked for this department for 31 years until his retirement in 1982.

Walter is survived by his Wife Isabella of Davis, his three sons, Carl and Ken both of Davis, Craig and his wife Deborah, their two sons Brent and Mark, and his daughter Jeanette LeMar and her husband Eric of El Dorado Hills. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Erickson of Palm Desert, nieces Jayne and Joan Michaels of New York city, nephews David Michaels of Los Angeles, Gail Hermann of Lincoln, and Jim Hermann of Palm Springs. A memorial service will be held at the University Covenant Church on Sunday 12/15/2013 at 2pm. Davis CA. 95618. We welcome anyone in the community that may have known him. His final resting place will be in the Davis Cemetery.
