Lawrence LEVENTON Obituary

LEVENTON, Lawrence (Larry)
Known as Shorty, he was born on September 10, 1939 and left this world on November 18, 2012. He is survived by his loving children Steve, Brian, Scott Leventon, Dawn Grovhog; 4 grandchildren, Michael, Nicole, Nicklaus, Jenna; 2 great-grandchildren, Amber, Willie and brother Donald Leventon. Larry lived his entire life in Sacramento and attended CK McClatchy high school. Larry (Shorty) was a very talented mechanic and welder. He spent much of his life working in the muffler business and sign business. He enjoyed working on cars from a young age. As time passed his mechanical talent continued to grow. His passion in life soon became drag racing and his family. He excelled in both. He loved his children very deeply and the thrill of speed he achieved while drag racing. His career in drag racing began in the early 1960's driving top fuel dragsters. Finally by the mid 70's he owned his own race car. His talent of driving race cars was respected by many. Shorty will be truly missed by all who were honored to know him and who loved him. Funeral Service will be celebrated at Harry A. Nauman & Son Funeral Home, 4041 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95822 on Friday, November 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.

I met Shorty in 2010, just a few tears before his passing. He was teaching me welding and I was helping him build a model T roadster from scratch that he planned on installing a super charged hemi in. I realize this is almost 12 years too late, but I still think of him whenever I'm welding on one of my projects. He was a kind and great man, much larger that his stature. And if you were at his Funeral Service, that was me smoking the tires and going sideways down Freeport Blvd in front of the funeral home as everyone was exiting the service. A final goodbye just as Larry would have lived it.
