Michael Andrews Obituary

Michael of Sacramento passed away at the age of 68. A native of North Dakota, Mike moved to Sacramento in 1959, and graduated in 1965 from Encina High School. Mike had a love for music and after high school he formed the band The Parish Hall Blues Quintet with some of his friends. In early 1967 the group was already opening shows for John Lee Hooker, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and Steve Miller among others. Late in 1969, the draft claimed 2 of the band members, and the remaining went on to pursue separate interests. In the 70's, Mike was playing solo or with base and percussion and later on formed a band called Slow Road Back which was a fusion of jazz/blues, and had a successful run of two years playing in clubs in all of Northern California. Mike has also appeared as a guest artist opening for Mick Martin in the early 80's and even performed at the Sacramento Blues Festival. He was very proud to be inducted into the Sacramento Blues Hall of Fame in 2015. Mike also graduated from Cal State University Sacramento and had a successful career for 25 years as an instructional aide for the Sacramento County Office of Education where he taught children with handicaps. He leaves behind not only a legacy of music and memories, but his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Pat; his sister Mary, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass on Wednesday, February 24 at 10:30am at Saint Philomene Catholic Church, 2428 Bell Street in Sacramento. Pat- I'm so very sorry for your loss. I had a wonderful opportunity to have lunch with Mike with my cousins Donna & Ken a few years ago along with John Roina. My brother had been friends with the boys at Encina. I always thought he was such a kind soul. May he rest in peace. My prayers go out to you and Mary and all the family. Carol Kentroti Crisp

Pat, Our sincere condolences to you and your family.I'm glad to have had the opportunity to meet you and to visit with you and Mike a few years back. My husband Ken Frye grew up with Mike and talked often of his great get togethers with all of their friends listening to music. Those memories will never fade. We are deeply saddened to hear about Mike. Always Ken and Donna

Wherever Mike is, there is music. Our families grew up on Burgundy Way in Sacramento. We played at each other's homes, climbed the weeping willow tree in the Andrew's front yard, hung out on holidays when the grown up were at one house on the block. When Mike first went public with his music, I went to the Abby (?) on Arden Way to hear him play and sing! Pat, you are in my thoughts and heart at this very sad time. Mary Kay, know that I am thinking of you and holding great memories of Mike in my heart and mind.

Sending sympathies to the family. I have known Mike since high school. We were team mates in football and track and field(shot put). Such great memories. He will be missed.

Sending sincere sympathies to Pat and Mary and the rest of the family. Having known Mike since he was sixteen I have fond memories of him hanging out at Tower Records, where I worked, and his constantly begging me to play records of his choosing for the whole store to hear. Later it would be kind of ironic that Mary Andrews would spend the next 40 plus years as my brothers girlfriend, companion and fiancee so we continued to have that family connection. May you find eternal peace, Mike. You will be missed.
