Dennis VIEGAS Obituary

VIEGAS, Dennis Gene
Born October 18, 1957 passed away unexpectantly on September 21, 2011. Born and raised in Sacramento, a beloved husband, devoted son, brother, uncle, nephew, godfather, friend and teammate. Those who knew Dennis know that after family, baseball was his next love. A baseball icon in the Sacramento and surrounding areas, having played organized baseball since 1965. He played on many MSBL Championship teams and nine World Series Championship teams from California to Florida. In 2000 Dennis was instrumental in helping rebuild Tahoe Tallac Little League in the area he loved so much. In 2006 he became complex manager at Dan McAuliffe Memorial Ball Park, and took great pride in creating a premier baseball facility and venue for SMSBL, local high schools and tournaments. A bright light that was taken from us too soon who is now taking charge in his tenacious way, with that smile and contagious laugh, playing hard and scoring runs from up above. Dennis lived his life to the fullest, was a true friend to many, an inspiration to all, and will be in our hearts forever. Preceded in death by his father, Dan Viegas Sr. (10/5/2010), he is survived by his wife Shari Viegas and their boys (Homey & Oreo), his mother Elsie Viegas, brothers, Dan Viegas Jr. (Nancy), Glenn Viegas (Ricki), nephews Daniel Viegas III (Patty) and Dean Viegas, great niece, Samantha, Godfather to Will Opdyk and Sophie Dow, and an abundance of friends. All are welcome to attend a celebration of his life on Monday, October 10, at 1 p.m. at Dan McAuliffe Memorial Ball Park, State University Drive, Sacramento, CA 95819. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dennis Viegas Memorial Fund at SAFE Credit Union, 6341 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95819. Info at www.smsbl.com

Dear Shari,
It has now been 4 weeks since Dennis passed and I can't tell you how much I miss him. He was one of my best friends and I am just so grateful that I have so many happy memories to keep me going when I'm missing him. The four of us shared so many good times, trips to Arizona, Las Vegas, Florida, dinners, working at the snack bar and just hanging out. Those memories will forever be in my heart and they make me smile when I think about Dennis. Now we will have to make those trips with just the three of us, but know that Dennis will be with us where ever we go and he will never be forgotten. Love you much, Kelly

Shari and family - so so sorry to hear about Dennis. I did not know him personally but we exchanged emails after we put his photo on the cover of HardBall Magazine. What a great athlete. I am sure you must still be in shock, my heart goes out to you, I know what it is to lose a husband (but not so suddenly). I know Dennis's MSBL family will rally around you because that's what MSBL players do. His photo and obituary will be in the next issue of HardBall Magazine.

I was shocked, saddened and my heart grew heavy when I heard the news about Dennis. I played with Dennis In Az before an I was amazed at how he just ran like the wind. I would always and I mean always run into Dennis every year here in Az and we'd just talk. He was just one of those guys that was always a friend no matter how long it had been since you saw him. I'm so sorry for the family and all his friends.

Shari and family, My thoughts and praryes are with you all at this time of loss. In reflecting on Dennis's impact on my life, I will always think of him as a "game changer". He was the type of player who could put the other team on its heels and swing the momentum of the game in your favor at any minute. He was kind hearted off the field, always willing to help anyone who asked. He was giving, never asking for anything in return. I have thought about him many times since his passing and will continue to do so for a very, very long time. We all will have to stand before God and I know Dennis did with dignity and grace. May God Bless you all in your time of need and give you comfort and strength.

Shari and Family:

We've had numerous interactions over the years on and around our Field of Dreams. All of the off field ones made us smile.
On the Field when Dennis's gear was in my Dugout it was great. When it was in the other dugout, it was usually a challenge.
No matter where he was, he brought a sense of honor and integrity to the game along with his vast array of skills.
I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to be on each side of the field with him, and especially grateful to have had seen you all at the last Labor Day Dinner/Raffle with your smiling faces and Dennis with both hands full of Raffle tickets beaming with anticipation of more gear to come.
He will be missed

Shari and the Viegas family. My deepest condolence for your loss. Although I only share my time on the field with Dennis, we manage to create a special bond in a new short time. Dennis was a great teamamate and a very funny guy. I did enjoy his company when we were together. I am very sad and still cannot believe that this happened so soon. But he is now with God and looking over all of us now as was his way on this earth.
Sincerely

I learned more from Dennis (It was baseball @ some other things a big brother might teach), then I had learned about Anything since the birth of my 1st child. We were teammates on the NABA GoldSox. I'll remember that time as a highlight of my life. There were others on that talented team I can't thank enough. However, Dennis ranting and raving at me about meeting a certain potential, once heaving a glove at me, were lessons I excepted. Shari and Dennis would then invite me to sit with them for post-game pizza. In subsequent seasons playing against Dennis, I had one Major goal as a player: Maybe Dennis would ask me to be on some team with him! I worked for that....I really did. My Condlolences to Shari and the family. Also, my Condlolences to everyone whom Dennis touched and influenced. My son loved him, and was #4 in the Ponderosa Little League. Dan Encisco

Shari and Family,
Words cannot adequately express the loss that Dennis is to all who played baseball with or against him. Known for giving 100+ percent on the field, he was a true inspiration and drove many of us to do the same just to keep up. He is and will be missed.

October 9, 2011

To Shari and All the Viegas Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of Dennis. He was such a great friend to me and an individual that I could always count on to help in any situation. His memories will always be with us not only on the baseball field, where he was always a leader, but anywhere someone needs help, because Dennis would be right there helping. Dennis would want us to smile and be happy. That is how I will remember him. My prayers.

Shari, It is still hard for us to believe that Dennis is no longer with us. We feel such a great loss ourselves so I cannot even begin to imagine what this much mean to you and his family. He was our friend and more important part of our family. He will never be forgotten and everytime we step on a baseball field his presence will always be welcoming and I can almost see his smile excited to play some ball.

Thank you Dennis for being a very big part in my grandsons lives. We had some of the best times at Tahoe Tallic Baseball with our grandkids. I also grew up just around the corner on 52nd St. My mom worked at the little store (Jet Market) on 9th. and 53rd. She loved you and your family. Tell her I said hi. My thoughts and prayers are with your family... Erin Hewitt

Shari and Family;
Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. Dennis was a unique player that the SMSBL and NABA leagues will not be able to replace. He made all of us play to a higher standard and his contributions to our leagues will never be equaled. Having him as a teammate was wonderful; playing against him made you appreciate his talents. I will miss him and hold him in my thoughts every time I take the field.

Dear TiTi Elsie, Danny and Glenny...please know that our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with you and yours through such an unexpected loss...We pray that all the beautiful memories will give you strength....I will always remember how Dennis and I would play as young cousins, in the backyard, or run down to the corner 7-11 for a 10c Slurpee, on many sunny summer days...there wasn't a time he would'nt pull on my ponytail!. but I loved it!....My dear cousin Dennis actually pulled it again, many years later, with a sympathetic smile on his face, at my Ma's Service... He is leaving such a beautiful legacy of his baseball career for so many people...what a kind spirit...Know that we will miss him and remember him always and will be here if you need us......Love you all very much, Marie and Patty Pacheco

Wow, I was stunned to hear the news. I will miss Dennis deeply and his spirit I will always remember. We had some great times playing baseball together when we were younger. Dear Elsie, Danny, Daniel, Glen, Dean & entire Viegas Families:
Our hearts are saddened by the sudden and unexpected news of Dennis' demise. What a shame! My son, Joseph, and I have known Dennis and brothers since we were little kids swimming at Tahoe pool. We also played lots of softball together. Dennis spent many fun times with (especially) little Daniel & Joey so many years ago. Although we've lost contact in the past 10-15 years, Dennis has always been in our thoughts. Please know that he'll remain with us in spirit. Denny played a huge part in teaching myself & my son, Joe, the true meaning of our beloved baseball. So sorry to lose him especially at such a young age. Elsie and sons (and of course grandchildren), we love you all. Just remember, he's now enjoying that great ball diamond up above! With deepest sympathy & respest, Maureen & Joe Burke

Shari and Family... we want to let you know that our thoughts are with you and your family during this rough time. Dennis left a lasting impression on all of us not only for his talent on the field but the person that he was in life. Those of us that had the pleasure of playing with him will never be able to step on a baseball field again without thinking about him.

I have known Dennis since around 1970,I grew up just down on 53 st. My dad still lives there. We were not real close, but now and then our paths would cross, and we would stop and chat about things going on in our lives. As life passes us all by, it was good to know that we would stop to ask each other how we were doing . I will miss that . Your friend Carl Gisler
