Returning to California and continued with the Interior Department in the Sacramento area before going to work for the Department of Water Resources in 1958. Don stayed with the Sacramento office of the DWR until his retirement in 1990.

Don was active in local Time and Distance Rally clubs of the 1960's and early 1970's. He took up skiing later in life and skied into his mid 70's But Don's true passion was photography.
