Fred DAWKINS Obituary

DAWKINS, Fred Alphonso
Feb. 27, 1955 - Sept. 26, 2011
Born in Kirchberg, Germany to Anna and SSGT Alphonso Dawkins. He died tragically at the age of 56. Fred was a very caring husband, son, brother and uncle. He graduated from Cordova High School with honors and was a member of the elite tack team that still holds the record for the 4 X 400 relay. He attended Cosumnes College, Sacramento State University and went on to Harvard where he obtained his law degree. He worked his way up at Downey, Brand, Seymour and Rohrer law firm. He spent his last years teaching at Sacramento City College. His declining health didn't slow him down. Left to mourn are his wife Cynthia, sons Aren and Phillip, parents Alphonso and Allie Dawkins, sister Sonya Gregg, brother Andre and wife Susie, nieces Sabrina, Ella and Ranelle, nephews Anthony and Andre Dawkins, Jr. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1958 and brother Elliott in 2004. Also grieving are the Hobbs family. We would like to thank everyone for their support. Services were held on October 3, 2011. Any donations may be sent to Loaves and Fishes or Sacramento City Advancement Office, 3835 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95822 'in memory of Fred Dawkins.'

Dear Dawkins family,

Fred was my classmate at Sac State in the '70s. He was 2 years older and ahead of me. But, we were both dedicated to pre-law. He took me under his wing & guided me through the ropes at CSUS. I remember him as so giving and friendly and warm and supportive and so funny. Everyone was proud when he earned admission to Harvard Law. And then we were captivated by his stories about the experience. I continued to watch with tremendous respect as he moved up into the most respected firm in town. I was later a UCLA Law grad myself and then went on to military service, I still hold the utmost respect, gratitude and affection for Fred. May God bless & keep you and hold your cherished memories alive in your hearts.

wow...this is a shocker as I just found out Professor Dawkins has passed, he was one of the best professors I've had in my life. I will miss the classroom debates and how he gets our minds turning and question things we normally wouldn't think about questioning. He has integrity, intelligence and a wealth of wisdom that he was more than willing to share. He's also one of the few professors that actually has humility to admit if he made an error and has no problem admitting it in class as well as acknowledging his students and giving credit when deserved. no amount of words can describe what a great human being, teacher, and mentor he is. he definitely will be greatly missed. it's always the ones with the greatest talents or the ones who do great things to contribute to this world that leave early. with the likes such as Steve Jobs, Mozart, etc...condolences to the family and friends and everyone who's lives he has touched or impacted.

My condolences to Cindy and the Dawkins and Hobbs families... I only recently heard of Fred's sad and far- too-early passing. He was always one of my favorite fellow students at Cordova High School -- bright, quick, and wickedly funny; with that infectious grin on his face -- and always just as fast with a kind word for people in need of one. Fred was a truly great human being, and I'm sure everyone who had the good fortune to have met him will always remember him kindly, and long regret his untimely loss.

When I heard Professor Dawkins has passed, my sister and I were devastated. We never met a man like him. He was very wise and was soooo funny. He was one of the most inspirational people I have ever met.. and even though I have only known him for less than a year. I miss him dearly.. and wish I could replay that semester with him.

I know this is probably a difficult time, but I will continue praying for the family.

To the Dawkins Family, words can not express what I feel at this moment. Professor Dawkins was the best teacher that I ever had at SCC. My heart is hurting. I remember when one of his sons surprised him for his birthday and came to our class. He was so happy to see him. From the many stories he told us, I could tell that he really loved his family. I learned so much from him about Business Law and Society. He will not be forgoten. He will surely be missed. Prayers go out to you and your family.

Dear Dawkins family,

I want to say that Professor Dawkins was hands-down the best teacher I've ever had. His warmth, wit and intellect made him an absolutely world class instructor.

He genuinely cared for all of his students. At the end of class, there was always a line of students asking for his advice on a variety of issues. He never once said that he was too busy or had an appointment to keep.

Please know that he touched the lives of many. I use his tidbits of wisdom on a daily basis and will for the rest of my life. I will miss him dearly.

Dear Cindy,

I'm so sorry to read about Fred!!! What a shock! You both were here at SAME DAY SURGERY, not long ago. What a legacy he created with all of his accomplishments. How lucky for you to have been such a huge part of his life.

I hope you and the boys are hanging in there. How difficult. I'm glad he got to be at home for his last days.

So Sorry Cindy, Thinking of you and your family.

Love,

Cynthia, Phillip, & Aren:
Our thoughts are with you during this time of transition. Fred was a wonderful role model and not only did I see his dedication to you as his family, but also to his community. I appreciated working with him at Sacramento City College. At times where we shared students, I would always hear praise of him from students!
He will be sincerely missed. If there is anything you need, you know we're in the neighborhood. We're thinking about you.

My deepest sympathies to the family,
I am so sorry for all of our lost. Professor Dawkins was a great and wonderful man. He helped me equip myself with law and self-respect as a young black man during my time spent as his pupil. He made me proud to stand tall and face opposition in the face with courage and respect. He not only taught me about the world through law but about my place within it. One of my goals in life was to bring back credentials that matched his because he was living proof that so many of us brothers and sisters can go through community college and become scholarly elites. I, we, have lost something great with the passing of our great motivator, teacher, and mentor. I will miss you Professor Dawkins. Thank you for all of you help, knowledge, guidance, and wisdom. In Fred Dawkins greatest lesson - KISS - I will send you off with one in appreciation.

Until we meet again,

My deepest condolences to the family and many, many friends of Fred.
I had the true honor of working with him on a special program that was held annually at SCC a few years back. He was so generous with his time and helped me to recruit both lawyers and students to participate. I found him to be inspiring, intelligent and great fun to be around. This is a terrible loss to everyone who knew him. I'm so sorry.

Dear Family of Professor Dawkins,

I was saddened with tears to hear of your loss. I extend to your family my deepest condolences. I attended Professor Dawkins class during Summer of 2011. He was a wonderful professor, whom I can say is one of my favorite professors. I have learned many valuable lessons from Professor Dawkins. I remember coming home from school everyday, sharing with my family what I have learned from his class. I will always remember a quote he shared with my classmates and I, "The best gift that a father can give to his children is to love their mother," one that I haven't heard of before and I appreciate him sharing that quote. One can tell that he truly loves his wife and sons. He was a very inspiring man. Professor Dawkins shared many wonderful stories that I keep close at heart and I'll never forget. I feel that I am truly blessed to be able to have known him and be one of his students. He was an amazing person inside out, a great mentor, and there is not enough wonderful words that can describe him. May Professor Fred Dawkins soul rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Cindy,
I am so sorry for your loss. It is life altering to loose your spouse. It is such a sad time but also I hope there is comfort in those around you who wish you and your family love and support. The services for your beloved Fred were very inspiring and touching. You had a wonderful tribute for such a wonderful man. I found comfort in the guest book when my dad and uncles passed away all within the same year. Unfortunately, I became too familiar with it.. but I also felt it comforting to hear from people who also felt my loss and shared with me those thoughts. I hope this finds you comfort as well. We love you and miss you here but please remember our prayers are constant and our thoughts are you will move forward in your life and enjoy his legacy, your children and know your mourning will be with you but there will be respite from time to time as you accept this loss. God Bless you and your family. TAKE CARE!

Fred was a dedicated friend, a brilliant attorney, a generous mentor, a fabulous father, a loving husband, and a tireless contributor to the community; in short, he was a person to whom, as Phillip accurately said at Fred's memorial service, the word "great" does not do justice. Our family's thoughts and prayers are with Cindy, Phillip, Aren, and Fred's entire family and extended family. Fred will always be in our hearts.

Fred accomplished many great things in his life, and we'll all remember him. Sincerely, Karen Recher-Smith
