James E. Mortenson passed away December 26, 2012, at the age of 82. He was born May 16, 1930 in Bisbee, Arizona to the late George E. and Margaret L. Mortenson. Beloved husband of 53 years to the late Carol Mortenson whom he met while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Texas. They married two months later and eventually moved to Sacramento, California where they raised their family.
While in the Air Force, Jim received orthopedic training. He combined his passion of helping people and his training in orthopedics by choosing a career at Progressive Orthopedics where he worked for 45 years.
He was a long time member of the Sacramento Horsemen's Association and an honorary member of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Mounted Patrol, organizing many activities.
Jim was a mason in the Grand Lodge of Texas for more than 50 years, and a member of the Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, and Cryptic Masons. He was an active member of the Ben Ali Shriner's of North America belonging to the Bedouins, Mounted Patrol, and Elk Grove Shrine Club. Jim quietly assisted at dozens of charity events to raise funds for the Shriner's Hospital and the mounted patrol mules which bring Santa to the Shriner's Hospital on Christmas morning.
Friends and family will always remember him by his sparkling blue eyes, flat top haircut and his calm manner that put all who met him at ease. Jim could be counted on whenever family and friends needed a hand with any problem large or small. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. We will always feel his love in our hearts.
