Joseph Angelo Obituary

Joe was born in Ellwood City, PA, on March 5, 1932, to the late Rudolph and Mary Angelo. After enduring the effects of a major heart attack in 2002 and a debilitating stroke in 2010, Joe passed away on September 28, 2015, at his home in Carmichael, CA. Joe attended Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, where he attained a B.A. degree in 1954. His M.D. degree from Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, was awarded in 1958. After completing his internship and specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, he and his young family moved to Carmichael. There he began private practice and was on the staff at Amercian River Hospital. When Mercy San Juan Hospital opened in 1967 he was a member of the original staff. He was a compassionate physician whose primary concern was the welfare of his patients. Dr. Angelo delivered more than 2000 babies before retiring from private practice in 1983. The same year he accepted a two-year contract to continue his specialty at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago, American Samoa. When he returned to the mainland in 1985, Dr. Angelo remained active by assisting in surgery. Dr. Angelo was a retired member of the California Medical Association; Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society; Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; and a member of the Northern California Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. His medical career spanned 44 years. Joe loved to sail and spent many years pursuing this pastime. His Berkeley Marina berth was the launching point of numerous weekend outings on the San Francisco Bay. A high point in his sailing experiences occurred in 1990 when Joe and his brother Jerry completed a round trip in his sloop, the Spree, from Berkeley to Kona, Hawaii. Additionally, Joe enjoyed annual sailing trips with family and friends to various destinations in the Caribbean. Joe is survived by his wife Ann with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage, daughters Leslie and Lynn, brothers Rudy and Jerry and sister-in-law Jeannette. Remaining cousins, nephews and nieces include Dorothy, Ann, Claire, Mike, Tony, Sarah, Pam, Scott, Susan, Rodney and Beth. He forever will be remembered by family members and countless friends for his intellectual curiosity, adventurous nature and generous spirit. Educational scholarships will be established in his name. Per his wishes, no memorial service will be held. Those who would like to honor Joe may contribute to KVIE Channel 6, Sacramento Public Library Foundation, Doctors Without Borders or a charity of choice.

I was one of the many babies Dr. Joseph Angelo delivered in 1984 at LBJ Medical Center, American Samoa. I looked him up out of curiosity and stumbled upon this obituary and was saddened to find out he passed away just last year. I wish I can thank you in person for your great contribution to the medical staff at LBJ American Samoa and people of American Samoa. If you were born in 1983-1985 at LBJ Medical Center chances are Dr. Angelo delivered you. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and thank you again Dr. Angelo for all the amazing service you've done on this earth plus the many lives you've touched and had an impact on.

What a great human being Dr. Angelo was!! I am so thankful for his kindness and expertise over the years. I started going to him in 1965 when he delivered my son and then my daughter later in 1969. What a great inspiration that he went and worked in the South Pacific. If he could do that then my husband and I did it too in the Peace Corps in 1998. I am sorry I did not know about this until now. My heartfelt thanks to him for his dedication to all of us. Sincerely, Mary Jo Verke

I had the privilege of phoning Joe about the 55th Yale Medical School Reunion in 2013and he told me of his unfortunate complication of a cardiac procedure. Joe was a great classmate and friend and the Alumni Association very much appreciated his generosity to all requests. He will be greatly missed by all members of the Class '58 Med at Yale.
