 BAUSTIAN, Leo V., USAF Major Retired
Born on March 14, 1924 in Luverne, MN to John and Theresa Baustian. Passed away on September 28, 2012 at his home in Antelope, CA.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Evelyn and Mary; his wives, Toni, Rita, Grace, and his loving companion, Maxine; his sons, Timothy and Paul; daughter, Julie Ann, and granddaughter, Candace He is survived by his brothers, Ed (Phyllis) and John (Liz) and his sister, Betty Leibnitz
Greatly missed by his surviving children, Denise (Joe) Stout; Theresa Swanson Laura (John) Sambucetti, Leo John (Linda), Bruce; Valerie (Ken) and daughter-in-law, Eileen. Grandfather to Timothy, Leo John II (Kristal), Jennifer (Dennis), Ryan, Jason (Monica), Greg and Angela. Great-grandfather to seven. Leo also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
Leo entered the US Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet Navigator in 1942. He proudly served his country during WWII while assigned to the 6th Ferry Group at Long Beach, CA. He navigated the ferrying of A-26, B-17, B-24, B-25, B-26, C-46, and C-47 aircraft to Europe, Australia, the Philippines, China, Burma, and India. In 1948, be re-enlisted into the USAF. During his Air Force career, he earned his Master Navigator rating and attained the rank of Major. He retired from active duty in 1965 while assigned to the 9th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron. He continued to work at McClellan AFB as a Civil Servant for an additional 20 years as a production manager in the F-105/F-111 division. Leo was a life member of North Highlands VFW Post 4647 serving as the Post and District 17 Commander. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, bowl, dance, watch his beloved Oakland Athletics and Raiders and above all he was an avid reader.
The family would like to thank all who provided professional and compassionate care to Leo including Sac Metro Paramedics, Carl Haller, MD, Mercy San Juan Hospital and Homecare staff, the nurses at Mercy Cardiac Rehab program and Sutter Hospice.
Visitation on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 5-8 PM. Funeral service Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 10:00 AM at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Ln, Sac. Interment will be private at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
Remembrances in his name may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America, the Firefighters Burn Institute or Sutter Hospice Care program. www.eastlawn.com
