When I met him, Lynn Hartzler was a retired annuitant, working part time and keeping everyone in the state well-informed about nuances of the law regarding independent study and alternative schools of choice. He was an amazing mentor as I learned the job and continued to rely on him for understanding the law. He was tireless in corresponding with both schools and parents when they had concerns and questions.
I was blessed to work with Lynn and to learn from him about serving students who needed alternatives to traditional classroom education. He was also delightful to chat with more informally, and he had a wonderful sense of humor. Lynn was a great man and will be missed.

I worked with Lynn at the California Department of Education after he retired. I say retired because even as a part-time consultant he worked circles around many full-time people. He was the Department's institutional memory not only on independent study and alternative education but on many other educational options and issues. Many colleagues including myself depended on his wise counsel. I should add that Lynn's passionate advocacy for children who needed a non-traditional educational path was infectious and inspiring. He worked tirelessly to make sure all students had high quality educational options.
Lynn and I kept in touch after we had both actually retired. I saw another side of Lynn in his devoted care for his wife Alyce as she faced the challenges of her last years. And I admired how vitally interested in the state of the world he remained and how positive he was able to be in the face of eventual physical declines (if there were mental declines he never showed it!).
I feel very fortunate to have work with Lynn as a colleague and to have shared a friendship over so many years.

I remember Lynn as a gentle and strong soul--I wish I had known him better.

Lynn was a good friend and an outstanding supporter of parents, students, and local administrators in the Independent Study Programs of California schools. It was a great pleasure to work with him and to benefit from his thoughtful advice.
