We prayed together in the Oak Park neighborhood. She gave our friend her beautiful big house for the family. Generous, compassionate, and friendly.

An amazing human being and role model. I learned so much about her today that I never knew, because she was such a humble person. To me she was just grandma, loving and kind. She was a great mother to my father, my aunt and my uncles. She was also a great mother to her community and a steward of the earth. She was radical, she was passionate, and she will be greatly missed.

I met Mary when I was in the sixth grade. Four Hahns and three Castles joined together, Brady Bunch-style, and Mary became my third mother. Mary was a person of many facets: daughter, student, camper, hiker, friend, wife, activist, and more. But, speaking as someone with a combined total of 150 years of experience with mothers (yes, I did add it up) Mary was, more than anything else, a mother.
She was a mother to Tim, Martha, Daniel, Chris, and myself. Beyond that Herculean feat, she was also a mother in a larger sense because she cared for and always put others before herself. Mary was a community activist and supported many social justice and environmental causes. With her backpack, she walked, took buses, or took trains wherever she went, not just to save money (and she was all about saving money), but to set an example and ease the burden on the planet. She was a fierce reuse and recycler! She was a good person who looked after those she knew, those she did not know, and those who will live here long after we are gone. Mary Hahn, you were a good mother. I will remember you.

The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all the world needs dreamers who do. Sarah Ban Breathnach
Mary was never afraid to step into the fire to accomplish what was needed. I saw her a few years ago in Sacramento and even in her seventies, she had that twinkle in her eye, and radiated enthusiasm that could not be extinguished. She cared deeply for her community where ever she was and raised an exemplary family. A saint in our midst. I admired her and will miss her. We have been blessed with her presence. I remember her as a passionately compassionate Christian. As her pastor years ago we worked together to bring a gospel of love in practical care to the community of need in which we lived and served. Her kindness and care will be missed. May she rest peacefully in God's loving being.
