Patrick McLane Obituary

Patrick Laurence McLane passed away at the Sutter Medical Center in Roseville on Sunday, January 15, 2017, after a short illness. Pat was born in Puunene, Maui, Hawaii on September 2, 1936, where his father was Division Overseer for the Wailuku Sugar Planation. Pat was the first of three children and the elder son of Laurence Sorenson McLane and Irene Ives Jones McLane. In 1937 the family moved to the Big Island of Hawaii where Pat grew up on the Paauhau Sugar Plantation. In 1946 the family moved to Hilo. Pat graduated at the top of his class from Punahou School in Honolulu in 1953, where he lettered in four varsity sports. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Pomona College and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1957. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1960 and practiced law in Honolulu for 43 years. In 1965, he married Gretel Blickhahn, also from Hilo, and was the father of two children, Keith Laurence and Katherine (Katie) Lynn. In 2003, he retired and moved to the Sun City Lincoln Hills community where his favorite activity was hitting golf balls in the beautiful California evenings. Pat was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who was never too tired to talk at length on the phone and offer his counsel to anyone who asked for his help. He considered his proudest achievement to be his children, and he was deeply loved in return and will be terribly missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his brother Douglas Richard McLane. He is survived by his wife Gretel, son Keith and wife Jennifer, daughter Katie and husband Jose Gonzalez, grandchildren Lauren, Dean, Tenoch, and Leni; and sister Laurene Alice McLane. The family will hold a private memorial service.

Gretel - we were so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. Barb called me yesterday. Hope you and the family are doing well. Scattering ashes in HI is always a good thing...we did same for an old friend with a catamaran of the beach at the natatorium late one lovely afternoon. Much aloha, Sue and Bill

Hi Gretchen, I just read in the Punahou Bulletin that Pat passed away at the beginning of the year. I always enjoyed the conversations I had with him back in the day. I hope you are doing okay. Much aloha, Beth
