Bill Bennett passed away on July 21 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by wife Mary April 18 of this year, sister Mary McGinnis in 2010, and son Casey in 2005. Born in Sacramento, attended McClatchy thru 11th grade, graduating from Lowell High in San Francisco in 1942. After serving 4 years active duty U.S Coast Guard in New Guinea, he married Jackie Forrester of San Francisco and had two children. Bill joined the Sacramento Police Dept in 1955, retiring in 1980. He married Mary Schneider Schmidt of Sacramento in 1970, relocating to Mary's family property in Georgetown in 1978. Bill was a 32nd degree Mason, active in York Rite, Scottish Rite, Ben Ali Keystone Cops, Royal Order of Scotland, and Order of the Eastern Star in which he served as Grand Chaplain State of California in 1986. Bill contributed his time and artistic talents to many community and civic organizations, and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He is survived by daughter Mary (Bob) Landrum of Sacramento, daughter-in-law Shirley Bennett of Woodland, twin brother Edward of Auburn, stepsons Jeff (Derren) Schmidt of Georgetown and Robert (Debbie) Schmidt of Sacramento, 4 granddaughters Shannon Truong of Rancho Cordova, Holly Ford and Ariel Bennett of Winters, Rebecca Green of Modesto, grandson Joseph Schmidt of Sacramento and 4 great granddaughters Alyssa, Dorian, Lily, and Grace. Memorial services will be held on Friday August 10 at 11:00 at the Georgetown United Methodist Church.
