
MERKLEIN, Robert
Of Carmichael, CA, passed away on September 11, 2012. Aged 89. Born August 15, 1923. A native of Milwaukee, WI. Father of Lori and Lorna Merklein. A veteran of WWII, serving in the 15th AAF, 451st Bombardment Group, WWII, LTD in Italy, 1942-45. As a Pilot 1st Lt., he flew 35 combat missions in a B-24 Liberator. He was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement in aerial flight while participating in combat. He earned a B.S. in Journalism in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin. He was a reporter for the Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Battle Creek, MI for one year (1950). Robert was News Director for Radio Station WBCK, Battle Creek, MI from 1951-1953. He was a Specification Engineer, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Constellation Engineering Division, Burbank, CA. from 1953-1957. Robert was a Technical Editor at Aerojet-General Corp, Solid Rocket Operations, Sacramento, CA from 1958-1971. He was Editor for the State of California, Dept of Education, Bureau of Publications starting in 1972. He retired in 1989 to spend time sailing and traveling. Funeral will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
