BOWKER, Georgene Marie
Born July 27, 1926, in Sacramento and affectionately called Ginger by her father, Georgene was also known as a tomboy, playing football with her older brother John and his friends. She learned to play tennis at Sutter Lawn Tennis Club, developing into a very competitive tennis player playing tournaments in the Pacific Northwest, later winning the Sacramento Women's Championship. She balanced her athletic life with a passion for music, dancing and piano. Georgene graduated from Sacramento High School and attended UC Berkeley. She was an Alpha Phi at Cal where she graduated and became an elementary school teacher in the Bay Area. While at Cal, she met the love of her life, Jack. They were married in Sacramento in 1950. During their loving marriage of 62 years, their favorite place to vacation was Carmel-by-the-Sea. Georgene and Jack enjoyed many years of playing tennis, golfing at Del Paso Country Club and skiing with family and friends. Georgene was also an active volunteer with the Junior League of Sacramento, serving on the KVIE Board and the Sacramento Symphony Board. Georgene passed away October 1, 2012, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Eugene and Jeanette Williams, and brother, John Williams. Georgene is survived by her beloved husband, Jack, and forever remembered by her children: Brite Bowker (Chris) of Sacramento, CA; Susan Hobson (Jim) of Jackson, WY; Kathy Metzger (Mike) of Sacramento, CA; her six grandchildren: J. Kent Hobson (Kendra), Jeffrey Hobson, John Bowker, Michelle Bowker, Mike Metzger, Jr. (Jackie) and Patrick Metzger. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held to honor Georgene at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the Sutter Club located at 1220 9th Street, Sacramento, CA.
