He fought in the Pacific Theater, survived the bloody advancement on Tarawa, taking direct hit on his radio equipment which saved his life. After his honorable discharge from four years of service with the Marines, he joined the Army and served his country faithfully as a radio operator again until 1951. During his time in the military he earned several medals. After leaving the military he and his new family moved from New Jersey to Texas, then on to California. They settled in Bakersfield. In 1960 they moved to Sacramento. Al began working for AT&T, as a lineman, transferring to Engineering after breaking his arm. He eventually progressed into management there. After retiring from Bell Telephone, Al worked as a Contract Engineer with different companies including Volcano Telephone, until retiring for good, after a total 30 years in the telecommunications field. In the mid 70's Al purchased a 10 acre almond grove and enjoyed working and living the gentleman farmer life. Later in life his hobbies changed to computers and computer programming, golfing with his buddies, and watching 49ers' football.
Al truly enjoyed the friends he made in his final years of his life at Crosswood Oaks, and he will be remembered by his friends, family, and acquaintances alike for his kind temperament, his love of family, and his goodness towards his fellow man. We love you Pop, and already miss you so much. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life with us on Saturday, February 16th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Crosswood Oaks Community Home, 6650 Crosswood Circle, Citrus Heights, CA. 95621.
