HELLMUTH, Jr, Dr. William F.
Age 93, died in Sacramento, Jan. 10, 2013. Professor Emeritus; U.S. Treasury official; national & international tax policy & finance specialist; City Councilman and deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather. Son of Sybel and Wm F. Hellmuth, Bill of Washington, D.C.
Bill attended Yale University, 1936-48 Phi Beta Kappa. Married his sweetie, Jean, before WWII. Decorated Army Major, XIX Artillery. Awarded Air Medal, Bronze Star. Professor of economics at Yale, Oberlin (and Dean), Tanzanian University College, McMaster (and V.P.) and at Virginia Commonwealth University (Dept. chair). Bill also applied his skill at the Federal Reserve, and was Director at US Economic Research Bureau and Bank of Tanzania. He was Appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of U.S. Treasury 1968 and Authored many scholarly books and texts.
As a community volunteer, he read to schoolkids, was on many service boards, guest lectured at Sac State, Town & Country Democrats & others on Social Security, education, income disparities. His Ohio City Council enacted the state's first Fair Housing Law. With his analytic intellect, sense of justice & care, he was a calming but effective leader and team member, making institutions, government and organizations more productive. He loved teaching, travel with family, youth sport, the A's and River Cats and had a heart of gold. His advice, 'Don't look back.'
He is survived by Jean, beloved wife of 70 years; children: Suzanne, William L, Peter, (Jim, died 1962); grandchildren: Gurdon, William, Mark, Evan; brother James G. Hellmuth & nephews, Jay & Tim. Memorial service: 2:00pm Sat., February 23, Unitarian Church, 2425 Sierra, Blvd, Sacramento.
