SLIVKA, Donald Benson
Born March 5, 1934, in San Francisco, CA, passed away at home on April 14, 2013, in Sacramento, CA, from congestive heart failure, he was 79 years old. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dianne and his three daughters, Diana Dykstra (Bruce) of Claremont, CA, Donell Slivka of Sacramento, CA, and Dara Slivka of Burlington, NC, as well as his beloved granddaughter Maura Dykstra and her partner Anthony Ruozzi of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his three nephews and three nieces; twelve great nieces and nephews; six cousins, and many wonderful friends and extended family.
He worked for the Sacramento County Probation Dept. for 34 years, but started his law enforcement career in 1956 for the Califomia Youth Authority as a group supervisor at the Northern California Reception Center in Perkins, CA. During his career with the Sacramento County Probation Dept. he rose through the ranks to Chief Deputy Probation Officer. When he retired he was in charge of Adult Court Services. Prior to that he was in charge of Sacramento County Juvenile Hall, where he hired young Probation Assistants of whom he was very fond and called his ""babies.' Most of his babies went on to distinguished law enforcement careers. He was a highly respected member of the law enforcement community and cherished by judges, law enforcement officers and colleagues alike.
He was a member of the Elks Club for many years. When he retired in 1994, he joined SIRS (Sons in Retirement #93) and was a committed member holding all of the leadership offices, including being the Big Sir in 2003, He enjoyed monthly lunches with his VIP group comprised of fellow retired probation officers. He was a volunteer at the Belle Cooledge Library. For many years after retirement he enjoyed traveling and playing golf. For 44 years he enjoyed vacationing with his family in Capitola, California where his ashes will be scattered in the Monterey Bay. No public services will be held.
