Elizabeth GIBSON Obituary

GIBSON, Elizabeth Ellen
June 5, 1942 - October 14, 2013

Liz Gibson, a fifth-generation descendant of California pioneers, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her Sacramento home on October 14, 2013. Born in Sacramento, her family moved to Calaveras County when she was six years of age, and she grew up there on a cattle ranch. She graduated from Calaveras High School in 1960 and received a B.A. from the Univer- sity of California at Davis in 1964. She served two tours of duty as a volunteer with the American Red Cross in Vietnam. On her return from the war, she received her Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She had a distinguished career spanning over 30 years with the California State Library in Sacramento.

Liz was raised in a Masonic family and, as a young girl, became a member of the Order of Job's Daughters. She was a fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Azalea Chapter No. 66, San Andreas. In Sacramento, she became a member of Faith Presbyterian Church where she was active on several committees.

After retirement Liz performed volunteer work for several organizations including the local branch of the Sacramento Public Library. She also worked tirelessly with several organizations dedicated to the rescue of Bichon Frise dogs.

Liz is survived by her long-time companion, Sheila Thornton of Sacramento, and by her brothers David W. Gibson, of San Rafael, Daniel E. Gibson, of Nashville, Tennessee, and John R. Gibson, Folsom.

A memorial service for Liz will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Road, Sacramento California 95831. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Faith Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
