Arthur Watts Obituary

Born January 22, 1940 in Wayne County, West Virginia, Art died at home in Sacramento, California on January 26, 2016. He never forgot his wonderful childhood in Dehue and the many friends he had there. Art was a long time resident of Sacramento, California. He worked in the auto parts industry for over 50 years and was well known in the Sacramento area. He considered his many customers his friends. Art lived life with joy and enthusiasm. He loved going to classic car events in his restored 1955 Chevy truck and enjoyed being a member of the River City Rodsters. He enjoyed working with his wife of 54 years, Jeannette (Underwood), in remodeling and landscaping several homes. He is survived by Jeannette and their two sons, Brian and Tim, his daughter, Laurie McMonigle and grand-children, Kyle Watts, Brandon Wilson, Stephanie Wilson, Kelsie McMonigle, Taran Rilea, and one great-grandchild, Sammy. He is also survived by three brothers, Ervin (Freda), Clifford and John (Janice) Watts, and three sisters, Shermie Coe, Peggy Brewer (Leonard) and Jaynetta Conroy. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Laura (Frazier) Watts, and two sisters, Susan Reynolds and Ruby Winters. He was also dearly loved by many nieces and nephews, who were very special to him. Art was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (gastro-intestinal stromal tumors) (GIST) in 1997 and was told he had only a 20% chance of surviving five years. He and Jeannette faced his illness with courage and determination and he survived nearly 19 years after his initial diagnosis with the wonderful care of his physicians, surgeons and some ground-breaking medications. He was always ready to talk with other cancer patients to offer encouragement. He said that having cancer taught him to focus on the things in life that really matter. Memorial remembrances can be made to The Life Raft Group (for GIST research), Wayne Plaza II, 155 US Highway 46, Suite 202, Wayne, NJ 07470, or to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals, PO Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438-4510. Memorial services will be private.

I have deleted this message more times than I can count. I have been trying to figure out how to express my thoughts about my Brother in Law, Art and my sister Jeannette. I am at a loss.
I keep coming back to their marriage. This Saturday they will have been married 55 years. That is a long, long time! I'm sure it was filled with ups, downs, potholes, smooth sailing and vistas. Each of these phases added to the woven tapestry that was their marriage. They had fallen into the comfort of knowing each like only a soulmate can. To know and anticipate the needs and wants of the other. Jeannette cared for Art with the strength and tenderness that only a lifelong partner can do. She provided the love and comfort that was equal to the immense courage that Art possessed throughout his long battle. I love you both.

My Uncle Art was one of the brightest lights in my life. I am so very, very blessed to have had him for so many years to help guide me thru life and I know it is due so much to the the tight bond between he and my Aunt Nette.
Uncle Art was courageous, and Aunt Nette has ever and always been the greatest support to him, devoting herself fully to him to make sure he had every treatment available and was eating all his favorite foods and was the best companion a wife could be to her husband.
His outlook on life was always so positive and encouraging he inspired so many people and we were so fortunate to have the two of them as loving examples of what devotion to your mate really means.

I love you both and carry you in my heart, always and all ways.

Art was my big brother for 55 years. He fought a strong fight against cancer better than anyone I have ever known. I believe his success in battling this cancer for so many years is likely because he had such a strong partnership with his wife Jeanette and she cared so long and hard to make his life the best they could have. They did love each other so very, very much...and she cared for him with the kindness of that love. Dee

He sounds like a very compassionate man, and I can only hope that he felt equal compassion and care from everyone in his life. Laurie, you and your family have my deepest condolences as his daughter and grandchildren. No words can ease the levels of loss you are experiencing, but you are also a truly compassionate and generous person that deserves all the room and the support to grieve, and I am here for you.

Uncle Art was so kind and supportive to me throughout my life and especially when my mom passed. My whole family loved him very much. I can't imagine the loss that his wife, children and grandchildren must be feeling. Listen closely and you will hear him. Love, Jenny
