Patricia Susan Riley

1946 - 2017

Patricia Susan Riley (Dougherty) died suddenly on March 30, 2017 at her home in Elk Grove, California. "Pat" or "Patty" was born on May 10, 1946 in Stockton, Ca. A graduate of St. Mary's High School in Stockton (1964) and of Sacramento State College (1968), she held a long career in public service as a social worker for Sacramento County, where she worked as a foster care placement worker, and later, as one of the original team members of the Independent Living Program, assisting teenagers and young adults transitioning out of the foster care system. Following her retirement in 2007, Pat enjoyed book club, playing pinochle, sewing doll clothes, making cards at the Paper Garden, travelling around the world with her husband of 46 years, volunteering with the Foster Youth Education Fund fashion show, and taking care of her nine-year-old grandson. She loved animals, and every vacation story began with a recounting of every wild animal seen. At home or on the road, she appreciated good food and wine, so dinner with Pat typically included both. She maintained close friendships with people from all stages of her life, and touched the lives of so many more. Pat is survived by James Riley (husband), Katie Riley (daughter), Eric Nakano (son-in-law), Doyle Nakano (grandson), and countless friends. Services are scheduled for Tues. April 11, 2017, 10:30 am at Herberger Funeral Chapel (9101 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove), followed by interment at Hicksville Cemetery (10035 Arno Rd., Galt) at 12:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Sacramento SPCA or the Foster Youth Education Fund.
