Charles E. Winship(1942 - 2013)

East Springwater, N.Y. - Charles E. Winship, 71, of East Springwater, passed away at his home on Sunday (Oct. 13, 2013), with his family and friends by his side.
Born March 9, 1942, in Salamanca, he was the son of Elliott and Marie Winship. He was a graduate of Salamanca High School. During his high school years, he made maple syrup, worked on the Valent farm, and plowed snow with "Allis" to help pay for his education at the University of Buffalo.
Winship spent his entire professional career as a manager at Xerox in Rochester. He was very involved in his community of Fairport. He helped create a vision for a community center that would serve all ages. His ideas were fulfilled by the multi-use facility called Perinton Community Recreation Center.
Upon retiring from Xerox, Winship returned to his love of agriculture by earning a Masters Degree in Natural Resources from Cornell University and then buying a farm.
There he built a sugarbush with 110 acres of sugar maples. Sugarbush Hollow would develop into a thriving maple syrup business with the help of his brother, Bruce, and friends and neighbors. Sugarbush Hollow has several research areas that are currently being utilized by Cornell staff and faculty. It too, became a place for his new community to gather, to work, learn and play.
He is survived by one daughter, Doreen (Robert) Hopkins; one son, John (Catherine) Winship; mother of his children, Joyce Winship; grandchildren, Tanner, Aiden, Tyler, Alley, Calvin, Lyla and Mary; one brother, Bruce; one sister, Nan (Ron) Miller; nieces Mindy (John) Collins, Carrie (Franco) Manno; nephews, Steve (Jess) Miller and Mike (Terrilyn) Richards; and friend, Pam Masterson.
The funeral was held at the West Bloomfield Congregational Church UCC on Oct. 19, 2013. As Winship was a member of the choir, Pastor Cory Keyes, the church choir and band performed all his favorite pieces.
Burial was in Crawford Cemetery, Salamanca, N.Y.
