Marvin Hubbard Obituary
LIVERMORE, Calif. - Marvin Ronald "Butch" Hubbard of Livermore, passed away on May 4, 2015, at the age of 68 from complications due to prostate cancer.
Marv was born May 7, 1946 in Salamanca, N.Y. on his parents' first wedding anniversary. His parents, Susan A. and Marvin T. Hubbard, raised him on the family farm in Red House, N.Y.
Marv met his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Lee Lindquist at Randolph Central High School in 1957 and they were married in 1966. Marv was adored by his mother and father-in-law, Alice and Harold Lindquist (Kennedy, N.Y.), and was an ever-present fixture at their farm on Waterboro Hill, once walking there from his home on Bay State Road and back, just to see Ginny.
He played football and graduated from Colgate University in 1968 with a degree in economics. In 1995, he was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. He later went on to become a fullback for the Oakland Raiders under the number 44, where he gained fame for his toughness, strength and aggressive playing style. He scored 24 touchdowns in his career and received a Super Bowl ring when the Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings in 1976. To this day, Marv ranks 4th out of all fullbacks in history for yards per carry (4.82), a crowning achievement that was duly noted by his former coach, John Madden, during his Memorial Service in California on May 17.
Marvin also enjoyed a deep love for music and was a talented singer, guitar player and composer. He released recordings in 1978 that included the songs "Fullbacks Ain't Supposed to Cry," "Country Boogie," and "Legend In His Own Mind." In addition to playing football, he was a talented snow skier, ski jumper, golfer, baseball player, hunter, bowler, fisherman, card player and entrepreneur. He was a world-class storyteller who enjoyed nothing more than the company of his family, friends, teammates and sitting on the porch swing at his beloved country home and strumming his guitar.
Marv is survived by his mother, Susan (Alfred, N.Y.), his wife, Virginia (San Ramon, Calif.), his daughter and son-in-law, Allyson and Rob Morris (Livermore, Calif.), his son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Chrissy Hubbard (San Ramon, Calif.). He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Anna, Addy, Avery, Jake, and Nick. In addition, he is survived by his two siblings: sister, Sheila Hubbard-Foreman (Alfred, N.Y.) and brother, Michael Hubbard (Houston, Tex.).
A memorial service to celebrate Marv's life will be held at Randolph Central High School on Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m. Donations in Marv's honor can be made to the Randolph Central High School Athletic Department, which can be reached at (716) 358-7006.
