MACHIAS - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Westfall, 89, passed away on Wednesday (June 12, 2013), at the Pine Health Care Facility in Machias.
She was born to Adam "Pop" and Mae (Martin) Fox on Dec. 30, 1923, in Buffalo. She had worked as head nurse at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital for Dr. Rothchild in Springville and left to become the school nurse at Ellicottville Central School until her retirement. She was instrumental in starting the East Otto Ambulance Service and was nicknamed "Bandaid Betty."
She married her husband, Martin Westfall, on June 30, 1957, in Holy Spirit Church in Buffalo, and they were married more than 60 years. Martin predeceased her in 2010.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends called Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16, at the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, 271 E. Main St., in Springville, followed by a mass on Monday (June 17, 2013), at St. Mary's Church in Cattaraugus.
