SALISBURY - Billy Edward Benfield, 83, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26 2013, at W. G. Hefner VA Medical Center.

He was born June 1, 1930 in Buncombe County, a son of the late Stella Lee Vardamon and Eldridge Harrison Benfield.

Billy was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School in Buncombe County. After high school he entered the United States Army. He was retired from Rusher Oil Co. where he was a truck driver. Billy was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Joan Edwards Benfield; son, Philip Edward Benfield (Shirley) of Salisbury; daughter, Deedra Lee Blevins (Gerald) of Salisbury; sister, Mary Gentry of Asheville; four grandchildren, Hannah, Kenny, Gloria and Crystal; and seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Mason, Isabella, Justin, Jacob, Dakota and Olivia.

Visitation: 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at New Hope Baptist Church, 830 Choate Rd., Salisbury.

Service: 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at New Hope Baptist Church with the Pastor Darrell Worley and the Rev. Samuel Mills officiating.

Burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, with full military honors accorded by Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.
