Reverend Donnie Kent

CHARLOTTE - Reverend Donnie Clemon Kent, age 64, of Charlotte, passed on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center-Main, Charlotte.

Born on Feb. 8, 1948 in Wilson, he was the son of the late Elbert B. and Lillian Boykin Kent. Educated in the public schools in Wilson, he also attended Wilson County Technical School, Central Piedmont Community College and Hood Theological Seminary.

He served in the United States Army and retired from the United States Postal Service.

Reverend Kent served in the Ministry for 42 years. Reverend Kent first served as an associate pastor under the late Reverend William White at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in the mid 1970's. The last 16 years, he served faithfully as the minister of Third Creek A.M.E. Zion Church in Cleveland. Prior to that he served as pastor of the following churches to include Mowing Glade A.M.E Zion Church, O'Connor's Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Popular Springs A.M.E. Zion Church, and Moore's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church (Statesville N.C) and Rocky Creek A.M.E. Zion Church.

He belonged to the Minister Alliance and Men's Booster Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wille Otto Kent.

Reverend Kent is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 36 years, Leila Blake Kent of the home; daughter, Renae (Randy) Walton of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Zuri A. Walton and Hamilton Walton of Charlotte; brother, Smiley (Bernice) Kent of Kenly; sister, Linda Parrish of Kenly; aunt, Eula Renfrom of Wilson; brothers-in-law, James White of Charlotte and John White of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Kent of Clinton, Md. and Shirley Wright of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Service: Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at Soldiers Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church at 11 a.m. Military Rites and Interment shall take place at 1 p.m. at the Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd. Rev. Thomas Lee, Pastor, White Rock AME Zion Church will officiate and The Right Reverend George E. Battle, Jr., Presiding Prelate, Piedmont Episcopal District will deliver the eulogy.

Visitation: Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at Soldiers Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church at 10 a.m. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Renae and Randy Walton, 10405 Lemington Dr, Charlotte, NC.
