Franklin Delano 'Shorty' Smith

SALISBURY - Franklin Delano ("Shorty") Smith, 76, of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Born Oct. 3, 1936 in Faith, Mr. Smith was a son of the late George Smith and Gertrude Smith. Frank was educated in the Faith and China Grove School systems.

Frank was a veteran of the United States Air Force, worked in textiles for R.H. Bouligny Co. for nine years and later worked in medical sales. For over the last 20 years, he was owner and operator of Absolutely Signs in Mooresville. Frank was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the East Rowan YMCA. He loved his grandchildren, dog Mugsy, flying, fishing on Lake Norman and his Nordic Tug in Southport, and cowboy movies.

In addition to his parents and numerous siblings, Frank is preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Tyler Poteat.

Franklin is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Jeanne Pethel Smith whom he married on June 19, 1959; son, Steven D. Smith of Salisbury; daughters, Tina Smith Poteat of Salisbury and Shari Smith Thompson of Statesville; grandchildren, Katherine Poteat, Sara Poteat, Zachary Thompson, Whitney Thompson , Logan Thompson, Tyler Smith and Olivia Smith; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Bruce Sheets, Pastor.

Visitation: The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 24th from 12-1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
