George J. Bender

SALISBURY - George J. Bender, of Salisbury, died on Dec. 10, 2012. Mr. Bender was born Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Upon graduation from Fort Lee (N.J.) High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps First Division as Sergeant during World War II in Okinawa, earning two Purple Hearts and combat medals.

He attended New York University after his discharge and retired from New York Telephone.

He had been a member of the Telephone Pioneers; VFW Post Saddle Brook, N.J.; Harold B. Jarrett Post; JF Hurley YMCA; and RFS Center. Mr. Bender was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He leaves behind a loving wife, Lovern Roxby Bender, who he married on Dec. 19, 1981. Their children are Robert (Denise) Bender, Lisa (David) Bogdon, Margaret (Tony) Pethel, John (Lahni) Gorman and Edward Bender. George P. Bender and John Bender preceded him in death. He also leaves nine grandsons; four granddaughters; one great-grandson; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Kathryn Tricarico and Mary Clarke; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, Exercise Department, 1120 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Salisbury, NC 28144, in his name.
