Gilbert 'Pop' Gentle

KANNAPOLIS - Gilbert Theodore "Pop" Gentle, age 81, of Kannapolis, gained his entry into the gates of Heaven on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast in Concord after a period of declining health.

Pop Gentle was born on Nov. 7, 1931, in Rowan County. He was the son of Adam T. Gentle and Blanche Cannon Gentle. He was preceded in death by brothers Bobby and Wayne Gentle and a sister, Wanda Kay Griffin.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Hazel Hammitt Gentle of the home; his daughter, Roxane (Larry) Honeycutt of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Corey Bumgarner, Nick Honeycutt and Alycia Honeycutt; along with eight great-grandchildren, who he loved deeply. He is also survived by a brother, Arnold Gentle of Kannapolis, and a sister, Lucille Smith of Mooresville.

Pop was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved his family without boundaries. His name Gentle truly fit his nature as he was a truly kind, loving, and Gentle man.

He loved riding motorcycles with friends and more recently sitting on the porch, conversing with neighbors and enjoying the fruits of his labor. He was active with the Kannapolis Cruise In, taking his "baby," a pristine 1978 Mercury Cougar, along with his "Crew Chief," Great-Grandson Torren.

Pop Gentle was a proud U.S. Navy veteran achieving the rank of BM2 receiving numerous military awards.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. at the family home, 5015 Tucker Ave., Kannapolis, on Sunday, the 8th of September.
