James 'Buddy' Paris

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Sr. Master Sgt. James E. (Buddy) Paris, U.S. Air Force (Retired), 76, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013. He was a native of Cleveland, N.C., the son of the late Hal and Della Paris.

Sgt. Paris was an active and devoted member of East Pine Grove Park United Methodist Church and God's Corner, Johnson City. He had been a resident of the local area since 1996.

Sergeant Paris was a veteran of over 22 years having retired in 1975 at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. He served three tours of combat duty in Southeast Asia, two as an aerial gunner on "Spectre" AC-130 gunships flying over 200 combat missions. His military decorations include two awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, 10 Air Medals, two Commendation Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Gold Palm. He was a member of American Legion Post 22, NorthGlenn, Col., and life-member of VFW Post 3631, Aurora, Col.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1996 with over 20 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Adrienne Paris.

Sgt. Paris is survived by his wife: Wanda "Tyke" Paris; children: Jeanette Oglesby, David Paris, Aurora, Col., Gunnar Mar Edvarsson, Iceland, Cathy Paris, Mass., Pam Quinn, Colorado Springs, Col., Melisa Gregory, Fort Smith, Ark., Vernon Ball, North Augusta, S.C.; brother Harold Paris; sister Barbara Miller; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Sgt. Paris' final wishes were to have his body donated to the Quillen College of Medicine.

A Memorial service for Sgt. James E. Paris was held Friday, Jan. 18 at East Pine Grove Park United Methodist Church with Rev. Lon Tobin and Rev. Hagan McClellan officiating. A Military Committal service will be held at a later date in Mountain Home National Cemetery.
