SALISBURY - Mrs. Janet Barney Thomas, 83, of Waverly, Alabama and Salisbury, passed away Friday Oct. 12, 2012 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Ala.

Born Sept. 5, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Kerson W. Barney. She graduated in 1949 from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.

Throughout her lifetime she was devoted to taking care of her family and volunteering at Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she served in many capacities including president.

She was a member at Franklin Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Robert R. Thomas Jr. (1984) and brothers, Kerson W. Barney Jr. and Richard Barney.

Survivors include a son Stephen Thomas (Julia) of Waverly, Ala.; daughters Jill McNeely (Kevin) of Salisbury and Lisa McMahon of Kearneysville, W. Va.; nine grandchildren: Dr. Robert Thomas, Carrie Watts (Kevin), Rebekah Bruner (Jason), Anna Katharine Thomas, Andrew McNeely (Jennifer), Kathryn Laughlin (Christopher), Kristen Swift (Chay), Michael McMahon and Christopher McMahon and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Barney (Shirley) of Johnstown, N.Y. and five nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Services: A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 17, 2012 at Franklin Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.

Family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 10:30-11:00 a.m. in the church parlor. Other times they will be at the home of daughter Jill McNeely, 306 White Oak Dr., Salisbury.

Memorials: The family requests memorials be made to Franklin Presbyterian Church, 280 Franklin Church Drive, Salisbury, NC 28147.
