Joseph Stephen Davis, Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Davis passed away on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. He was born on Oct. 27, 1927 in Salisbury, the son of Irene Lewis and Joseph Stephen Davis.

He graduated from Boyden High School, Salisbury. Joe entered the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1944, as a member of the Corps of Cadets and a bass horn player in the band, only to have his college education interrupted by service in the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division in Osaka, Japan. Upon graduation from VPI in 1950 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Joe began a long and successful engineering career with Duke Power Company.

A registered Professional Engineer, Joe held many leadership positions in engineering organizations to include ASME (Life Fellow), the N.C. Society of Professional Engineers, and the Charlotte Engineers Club. He was awarded The Performance Test Code medal by ASME in recognition of his leadership in advancing the field of performance test code technology. In addition to being in VPI's Old Guard and the American Legion, Joe was a Shriner, Scottish Rite and a Master Mason with more than 60 years of faithful service. A devoted member of the Baptist church, Joe served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Gideon, and deacon. An avid supporter of whatever his sons participated in, Joe served as Athletic Director of Broadmoor Athletic Association, President of the East Lincoln High School Booster Club, and a Boy Scout leader.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 40 years, Wilma Ann Bolt Davis and his sister, Barbara Davis Upton.

He is survived by his wife, Estelle Rushing Davis; three sons, Steve Davis, his wife Karen and their son Neill Blue; Kent Davis, his wife Pam and their daughter Laura; Eric Davis, his wife Adrienne and their daughters Lillian and Reid. In addition, he is survived by his step-children, Ernie Rushing, his wife Janet, their children Amanda and Benjamin; Cindy Wells, her husband Mitch, their children Jonathan, his wife Kendra and their children Alana and Kate; Meghan Lowder and her husband Kelly and their children Ireland and Zailey; Tamara Rushing and her children Catherine, Emily, Michael, and Christopher; Sandra Maxwell, her husband John and their children Oliver and Edison; Victoria Dunaj, her husband Chuck and their children Jon Luke, Daniel, and Lilly. Joe is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jack Upton, and nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the many friends who cared for Joe during his illness and especially to the staff of Asbury Center.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 from 5-7 p.m.

Service:A service to celebrate Joe's life will held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.
