SALISBURY - J W Shuping, 88, passed away on April 2, 2013, at Autumn Care in Salisbury.

Mr. Shuping was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Rowan County, a son of the late Andrew Shuping and Jessie Miller Shuping Stikeleather. He was a graduate of Rowan County schools.

Mr. Shuping was the Chief Pilot for Carolina Tractor and Equipment. He was a member of Ursinus United Church of Christ. Mr. Shuping was a avid pilot and taught several hundred people how to fly.

Mr. Shuping was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II as a Flight Maintenance Gunner. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and the Aleutian Islands. A Prisoner of War, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal with three bronze stars and one overseas service bar.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Gaye Shuping, who passed away on April 28, 2012; and brother Ken Shuping.

He is survived by sons Edward R. Shuping of Fort Collins, Col., Steven L. Shuping of Gastonia; daughter Jan S. Hester and husband Tom of Gastonia; grandchildren Brian Shuping and wife Tina of Wilmington, Gina Sherrill and husband Ty of Gastonia, Debra Hester of Gastonia and Lance Hester and wife Phon of Gastonia; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Service: The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5 at Ursinus United Church of Christ conducted by Rev. Jim Staunton, pastor. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the U.S. Army.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Ursinus Church of Christ Fellowship Hall on Friday, April 5 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
