Leonard Franklin Baker

SALISBURY - Leonard Franklin Baker, age 80, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at Liberty Commons.

Born August 22, 1927, in Hendersonville, he was the son of the late Harvey Edgar Baker and Sarah Corrinne Baker. Mr. Baker was a graduate of Hendersonville High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served at the end of World War II.

After his service in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Hendersonville and began working for Balfour Mills, subsequently acquired by Kimberly-Clark Corporation. He was employed by Kimberly-Clark Corporation for 36 years until becoming disabled in 1984. Upon retirement, he was Superintendent and had assisted in forming new plants in Conway, Ark., and Beech Island, S.C. He also spent time in Prudhoe, England.

Upon moving to Salisbury, he was an active participate of Grace United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lucille Mullinax Baker, on April 30, 1999. They married on August 12, 1950.

Survivors included his sons, Benny Lee Baker (Kathryn) of Granite Quarry, Robert Leonard Baker, of Columbia, S.C., and William Franklin Baker, of Lexington; five grandchildren: Jonathon Robert Baker, Pamela Michelle Baker, Sarah Kathryn Baker, Hannah Elizabeth Baker and Benjamin Mills Baker; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a very close friend, Phyllis Buie of Gold Hill.

Service: Services will be held Saturday, February 23 in the chapel at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Mills Peebles officiating.

Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to services.

Memorials: Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 846 Faith Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.
