Richard Allen Reid Sr.
KANNAPOLIS - Richard Allen Reid Sr., age 72, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Tucker Hospice House after almost a year of illness.
He was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Rowan County, the son of the late Clarence Price and Martha Walters Allman. He attended Landis High School.
In earlier years Richard was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One as a weaver and later as a painter. Then, he became a police officer
with the Kannapolis Police Department.
Later, he entered the U.S. Navy
in 1967 and served in the Seabees for two years in construction battalion. During his time in service, he was viewed by his superiors as an exemplary officer.
He then worked for Pritchard Paint & Glass of Salisbury. Finally, he retired from the Rowan-Salisbury County Schools as a painter. Richard was president of the N.C. Public Schools Maintenance Association for two terms and won several awards for his services.
As a devout Baptist, he was ordained as a Deacon in the church in 1962. Throughout the years, he served as a strong member at Landis Baptist Church and later Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis. At Central, he was very active in various ministries of the church including chairmen of the Deacons, Building and Grounds Committee chairmen, cooked for the church, and cooked barbecue chicken for family and friends using his special barbecue sauce recipe. He went out of his way to make new members at the church feel warm and accepted even inviting them to his home. When time was left he enjoyed playing golf.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Griffin.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lois Baltes Reid; a son, Allen Reid of Kannapolis; a half-brother, Chip Price of Kannapolis; and sisters Susan James of Kannapolis and Paulette Hines of Morganton.
