Thelma Ruth Daniel Fortson

CHINA GROVE - Thelma Ruth Daniel Fortson, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, while receiving treatment at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

She was born in Madison County, Ga., on Dec. 28, 1923, to the late Toombs R. Daniel and Evie Delree Carithers Daniel.

Mrs. Fortson grew up in Georgia and at a young age moved to Landis with her family. At the age of 17 she met the love of her life, Fred Stone Fortson, and they were married on May 16, 1942. They were married for more than 66 years and raised four children (David, Becky, Terry and Perry).

She worked for Cannon Mills for more than 43 years and was always fond of the many memories and friends she made while employed there. After her retirement, she devoted her time to her loving family and her church (Jackson Park Pentecostal Holiness Church).

The many friends and family left to cherish her memory will remember her as a hard worker, a devoted friend and with a Christian faith that never waivered no matter the circumstances. She possessed a great sense of grace and strength that impacted everyone around her. Her gentleness made her a favorite of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She just always knew what to do or to say with everyone she came in contact with.

In addition to her parents and nine siblings, Mrs. Fortson was preceded in death by two twin sons, Perry Lee Fortson and Terry Lynn Fortson.

Mrs. Fortson is survived by her son, David Fortson and wife Dixie of Kannapolis; daughter Becky Wood and husband Bob of China Grove; brother J. Walter Daniel and wife Retha of Florida; seven grandchildren, Terry Lee Fortson of Georgia, Christy Leigh Rohletter (Chris) of China Grove, David Fortson II (Jamie) of Landis, Heather Wood of China Grove, Stephanie Reilly (Jackie) of China Grove, Rodney Fortson of Salisbury and Jody Fortson of Huntersville; and 15 great-grandchildren.
