William 'Bill' Emmett Andrews
SPENCER - William (Bill) Emmett Andrews, 84, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013, after a period of declining health.
Bill was born March 4, 1929, in Spencer, the son of the late H. Clyde Andrews and Erie Faye Andrews. At the age of three, he suffered an injury from a fall that left him neurologically impaired for the rest of his life. Unable to attend school, he lived at home with his parents and, until they were adults, a brother Robert (Bob) and a sister Nancy.
Bill was a personable boy and man and familiar to almost everyone in Spencer. He was famous for his walks around town, wearing overalls, a work apron and a good pair of walking shoes, trudging along picking up discarded drink cans and bottles for re-cycling. He kept Spencer clean almost single-handedly.
One of Bill's favorite stops around town was for a glass of tea at Steve's Chicken and Barbeque Restaurant, just down the street from Bethamy Retirement Home where he resided for many years. He attended Spencer Presbyterian Church while his mother was alive and then was a member of First Baptist Church of Spencer until his death.
A very special thanks from the family must go to Rev. Franklin Myers of Spencer First Baptist Church for his kindness and Christian nurturing to Bill over many, many years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his brother, Robert E. Andrews of Luthersville, Ga.; sister Nancy Andrews Ellis of Asheville; and several nephews and nieces and grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Interment was in Rowan Memorial Park cemetery in Salisbury alongside his parents. Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury assisted the family.
