William Jennings Setzer
CARY - William Jennings "Bill" Setzer, 82, of Cary, a Textile Engineer, died peacefully at his home following a brief illness on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Setzer was born in Raleigh on February 14, 1925, to the late William Jacob Setzer and Cornelia Mae Wilkins Setzer. His career in the textile industry spanned three decades, working with U.S. Rubber Company, Detroit, Mich.; The General Tire & Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio; Celanese Corporation, Charlotte; and Hercules Incorporated. He retired from the Hercules Research Laboratory in Research Triangle Park. Following retirement, he enjoyed his part-time employment with Ace Hardware in Cary.
Mr. Setzer was a member of the Hugh Morson High School Class of 1943 in Raleigh. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving with the Army's 528 AAA Gun Battalion in the South Pacific. He attended North Carolina State College under the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles. After a career in the textile industry, he returned to North Carolina State University, graduating in 1993 with a Master of Textiles degree.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Architect University Lodge 569 F&AM, Garden City, Mich.
On June 24, 1950, he married Helen Katherine Harrison of Plymouth, N.C., at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in Raleigh. They became the proud parents of two children. She predeceased him in 1977. Mr. Setzer was predeceased by his second wife, Virginia Moon White, in 1983.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Setzer was also predeceased by a baby sister, Edith Mae Setzer, in 1928.
Mr. Setzer is survived by his wife of 22 years, Judy Anne Collier. He is survived by his son, William James "Jim" Setzer and wife Brenda of Raleigh and by his daughter, Katherine "Kit" Setzer Arndt and husband Jeff of Cary. Surviving their beloved Pop are grandchildren Paul James Setzer and Jason Dean Setzer of Raleigh and Jennifer Nicole "Jenny" Arndt of Cary. Mr. Setzer is also survived by a stepson, Bradley Still and wife Jessica of Auburn, Mass., and a stepdaughter, Alesha Still McCauley and husband Terry and their son, Blake, of Fuquay-Varina.
Mr. Setzer enjoyed a life-long love of music. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cary, where he sang in the Chancel Choir for 26 years. He also enjoyed playing golf from his young adult years onward.
Service: A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, February 4 at First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy St., Cary. Interment at a later date will be in Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, February 3 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.
