Charles 'Charlie' Gillispie Sr.

SALISBURY - Charles G. "Charlie" Gillispie Sr., age 79, of South Jackson Street, departed from this earthly life on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the NC State Veterans Home at Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

He was born Dec. 13, 1933, to the late Allen and Martha Lyerly Gillispie. He was educated in Salisbury city schools, having attended J.C. Price High School.

After high school, he sought to serve his country as he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While in service, he traveled extensively around the world and played football with the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He served during the Korean Conflict, the Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam War. He retired as a Mess Management Specialist Second Class on Jan. 1, 1982.

"Charlie," as he was affectionately called, worked at the VA Medical Center and also as security for Skyland Homes.

An exceptional golfer, he built a 6-hole golf course in Grand Turk, West Indies. He won numerous tournaments and received many trophies. He was also inducted in the J.C. Price High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Dec. 1, 2007.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, is a brother, George Gillispie.

Those who are left to cherish his memories are three sons, Charles G. "Gill" Gillispie Jr., Kenneth (Bianca) Gillispie and Tony (Merita) Gillispie, all of Salisbury; a daughter, Sylvia Gillispie of East Spencer; brother Tommy Gillispie of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, his golf buddies and friends.

Visitation and Funeral Service: Monday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, USA. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30-11 a.m. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of a niece, Tonya Gillispie, 310 Clancy St.

Interment: Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard.
