Francies 'Ilene' Bown Allen

MATTHEWS - Francies "Ilene" Bown Allen, 90, of East John Street, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Trinity Oaks Assisted Living in Salisbury.

Mrs. Allen was born in Grady County, Ga., on Dec. 16, 1919, to the late Eugene G. "Jake" Bown and Jeanie Cooper Bown. She graduated from Ochlocknee High school in 1937. While in high school, she met George Corbit Allen and they married in 1939 after George enlisted in the Marine Corps.

She loved traveling and meeting new people all over the United States. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith. She was an avid reader, did crochet work and loved working crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Allen is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George Corbit Allen; a daughter, Judith Page Allen; two sisters, Bert Arrington and Agnes Davis; and a brother, William Bown.

Ilene is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Allen Dietz and husband Lee of Lexington; her son, David Allen and wife Betty of Longwood, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jamie Lee Dietz of Greensboro, Jesse Ryan Dietz of Lexington, John Corbit (Jay) Allen of Tampa, Fla., and Patty Allen McCollum and husband Justin of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two great-grandsons, Nathan and Stephen McCollum; sister Berniece Ulmer of Moncks Corner, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank JoAnn Martin, Rita Smith, Debbie Fesperman, Abigail Reed, Whitney Weaver, Chasity Kiker, Brooke Honeycutt, Trina Jordan, Jessica Beck, Brittany Rabon, Lynne Ramsey, Leslie Walker, Mysti Harris and B.J. David for the wonderful care and love they gave to Mom at Trinity Oaks Assisted Living.

Service and Visitation: The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 at Matthews United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Lyon and The Rev. Brad Hopper officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
