James 'Bird' Campbell

SALISBURY - James Lloyd "Bird" Campbell, age 85, of Salisbury passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at the W.G. Hefner Medical Center Liberty Lane Hospice House.

Mr. Campbell was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Rowan County, the son of the late Beulah Elizabeth Agner Campbell and James Leo Campbell.

He attended Boyden High School and Catawba College. Bird was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII from 1945-1947. He worked for his father as a teenager building houses, then went to work for Duke Power as a mechanic for 20 years and later started Bird's Floral Supply in Salisbury. Bird loved all sports and lettered in basketball in high school. He also enjoyed working with his hands, gardening, music, family get togethers and beach trips. He also enjoyed everything outdoors, fishing and hunting, and loved spending time at home with his wife and family.

He is survived by the love of his live for 64 years Betty Jane Mowery whom he married Sept. 17, 1949; daughters Lynn Harris (Scott) of Lake Lure, Elyse Brown (Tracy) of Fayetteville, Susan McNeely of Marion and Leigh Whitfield (Jeff) of Holden Beach; son, Vic Campbell (Viktoria) of Rockwell; grandchildren Gunar Harris, Janene Aul, Asa McNeely, Cara Spencer, Jacqueline Smith, Holly Campbell, Wiley Revis, Heather Johnson, Lauren Campbell, Avery Campbell and Skyler Whitfield; great grandchildren Taylor Aul, Mac Aul, Cole Spencer and Levi Johnson.

Visitation and Services: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 at W.G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center, Liberty Lane Hospice House conducted by Pastor Margaret Almeida with graveside service to follow at the Salisbury National Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the V.A. Medical Center, Liberty Lake Hospice House, 1601 Brenner Ave., Salisbury, NC 28144 or to Second Presbyterian Church, 732 Lincolnton Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144.
