Janet Harrison Shannon

SALISBURY - Dr. Janet Harrison Shannon, age 70, of Lash Drive, passed away peacefully at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Wednesday, June 27, 2012.

Born on July 5, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Paul Harrison, Jr. and Anna Mae Harris Harrison. She graduated from Girls High in Philadelphia and furthered her education at St. Joseph's University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

Having a zest to learn more in the field of education, she studied at Temple University in Philadelphia, earning a Master's degree in Education and a Doctorate in Sociology. Shaping young adult minds was a passion for her and she enjoyed teaching immensely. She relocated to North Carolina and retired as a professor of Sociology from Davidson College, Davidson. She was affiliated with the Black Students Union of the college.

A member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, she was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for over 30 years.

Those left to cherish precious memories are her daughter Jill (Lorenzo) DeBose of Salisbury; son Lawrence M. (Dari) Shannon, Jr. of Newport News, Va.; a sister-cousin, Rose Marie Jenkins of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren; and other relatives and dear friends.

Public Viewing: Wednesday, July 4 from 1-6 p.m. at Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service, Salisbury.

Visitation and Service: Thursday, July 5 at 12 noon at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m. The Omega Service of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will begin at 11 a.m.

Interment: Monday, July 9 at Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester, Pa.
