Lonnie Cruse Holmes, 105, of Trinity Oaks in Salisbury, formerly of Linwood passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018. Mrs. Holmes was born January 26, 1913 near Gold Hill in Cabarrus County. Her parents were Henry Dotson Cruse (Dick) and Sarah Jane Haltom Cruse. She attended Mitchell Home School and Junior College in 1933, which later became Pfeiffer College, and was the oldest alumni of the school in Misenheimer. She also attended Appalachian State College (ASTS). Mrs. Holmes loved music, giving her first piano recital in 1933. She began teaching in 1935. She taught primary school in Montgomery and Davidson Counties for 40 years, and retired from teaching in 1975. She loved children, the outdoors, gardening, fishing, and nature. She was a member of Home Demonstration Club in Davidson County for 50 years, did staff work for Cabarrus Genealogy Society, and wrote the history of her family. She loved to write stories about growing up on the farm and many of her stories have been published. She was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Holmes, of Linwood whom she married on Sept. 6, 1935; her parents and brothers, Harvey, Jordan, Fay, Jesse and Orlin Cruse. She is survived by nieces, nephews and many great nieces and great nephews, and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Holmes was a member of Linwood United Methodist Church where she played piano and taught Sunday School class for 46 years. Visitation and Service: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 16, at Linwood United Methodist Church, 4700 Old Linwood Road, Linwood, NC 27299, with Revs. Charles A. Lindquist, Jr. and Martha Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery, 10890 NC Highway 8, Lexington, NC 27292. The family will visit with friends from 1-2 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Memorials: Memorials may be made to Linwood United Methodist Church, Music Fund, 4700 Old Linwood Road, Linwood, NC 27299. Davidson Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Holmes.
